About Us

Boyd's Garage was originally started by Don Boyd, hence the name. The mechanical repair workshop was started in the early 1900's and located at 421 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills and was originally known as Boyd's BP Service Station. There were petrol pumps at this original address.

At an unknown later date, Boyd's Garage was bought by Jack Relf took on a partner a few years later, named Don Firth. On the 23rd of September 1936, the partners of Boyd's Garage registered their membership with the Motors Traders Association (MTA). To this day, the business is still registered as a member, and is currently the eight longest serving member of the MTA. At another later date, Don Firth bought out Jack Relf and Don ran the business himself. In the early days of Boyd's Garage Don Firth had a strong passion for English cars and thus his passion for the MG sports car, restoring and rebuilding many. Some of the cars that Don and his staff built were for his own enjoyment and others were tailored to his customer’s needs. These vehicles would be restored for concourse involvement or for everyday use. Don's love of MG's had taken him to hill climb events and car showing (concourse events).

Boyd's Garage ran at that address until 1976. Increasing rent prices in the area in the late seventies caused the workshop to relocate just around the corner. Boyd's Garage moved into 51 Holt Street, Surry Hills where it spent the next five years sharing new premises with Ed DeDona at DeDona Auto Collision Repairs. The present owner of Boyd's Garage at that time, Don Firth, decided to retire in 1980 after spending some forty years at the helm. Don Firth handed over the reins of Boyd's Garage to one Tery Wallace, who started working as a motor mechanic with Don Firth in 1972, and is still the current owner to this date.

March 21st, 1985 signalled another move for Boyd's Garage. Boyd’s Garage was offered the site at 5 Nickson Street, Surry Hills where it joined forces with Surry Hills Tyre Service, owned at that time by Ed DeDona. Ed had moved out of his panel beating shop to take on the role of Surry Hills Tyre Service owner & operator. For Boyd’s Garage customers, this meant that not only service and mechanical repairs be offered, but also suspension and steering services would now be covered. Wheel alignments and balancing as well as tyre repairs and the supply and fitment of all popular tyres were just a few of the new services available.

Fast forward to the present date, the workshop at Boyd's Garage is still holding fast in this ever-changing climate. We have installed the latest in computerised Wheel Alignment technology. This Wheel Alignment system offers technology to align all front wheel drive, four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles in order to help maximise tyre life. We also have new automotive car hoist systems by Powerrex and wheel balancing equipment by Hoffmann. For diagnostics, we have the latest technology in OBDII scanning systems and technical automotive data catalogues.

Some of the Boyd’s staff are still working in the industry today, either in the automotive trade or as teachers. Names listed that come to mind: Joe Abella, Ray Beekman, Keith Bridgement, John Chapman, Tery Wallace and later Kevin Manners. Ray Beekman served his apprenticeship at Boyd's Garage and is still in the automotive trade and sometimes teaching. Kevin Manners served his apprenticeship at Boyd's Garage and later went to work with Ray Beekman Ray Beekman Automotive Engineering in Hurstville.

Finally, in an effort to go green we have installed a VGS Oil/Water Separator System to comply with the latest water and sewerage program. This allows us to limit our water usage, keeping our workshop area clean and safe for workers. We are also able to pressure wash engines and gearboxes with no harm to the environment.

2017 marks a big year for Boyd's Garage. Friday June 2nd, 2017 was our last day at the 5 Nickson St, Surry Hills workshop and over the following weeks we embarked on the move to Peakhurst. After many years the Surry Hills Tyre Service name was put to rest, and Peakhurst Tyre Service name was then established. Monday June 26th, 2017 was our first official day at our new home in Peakhurst.
